My thick and bustling coils catch your attention. You look at em’ with a mix of wonder and trepidation. Your hand itching to touch, I bet. Get your fingers lost in the dark strands until the craving is sated. But someone must have taught you better. Because you don’t do that. You can’t. Instead, you look on with envy and petulance cause’ how dare your “freedom”, your “rights” be stunted by someone like me. So like all the others, you take what power you do have and you take that in your hand like a good ol’ sharpened straight razor and start slicing away.
You use words like WILD, UNTAMED, UNACCEPTABLE.
Nappy would have been more to the point but you’ve seen the future and you know damn well that’s gonna’ come back to bite you later when I hit up corporate. It don’t matter though- cause’ at the end of the day, you’ve got what you wanted. My hackles are raised because how dare you? I’m ready to attack but I know better too.
You wanted me to prove you right. Prove that every aspect of me, especially my hair, are less than human. Less than respectable. Less than you…
Like a good girl, you expect me to bite my tongue. And I do-cause I got better things to do than go to jail just to get treated like an animal-times ten.
I tell myself that sometimes silence is the answer. And sometimes it’s not.
Sometimes it’s better just to lie in wait. Keep collecting the arsenal you need to take down your oppressor. So for now, I’ll simply say “yes, sir” or “yes, ma’am” because you like those titles. Gives you some sense of importance you don’t possess. And I’ll remember that self-congratulatory look on your face because you think you’ve won. Little do you realize, is that people like me know patience. I’m just going to wait in the wings until I can show you that I am the superior species.
